And It's Only October

Have you ever hated somewhere so much as I hate you now! Darwin you Bastard! There's nothing sweet about you I hate yer stinking guts and I want to leave!

In our small but comfortable housing commission house we have no aircon, definitely not complaining about that, we prefer it that way. The louver windows allow reasonable airflow, ceiling fans will do but are poorly placed and barely cut it in the heat.

The problem is that our house is like a noise magnet! We hear everything from Dogs barking all night at drunks who won’t go home, kids who roam the street, the Pokemon Go freaks or sometimes at nothing at all. Our neighborhood is cluttered with the sound of angry and miserable households with nothing nice to say. I still can’t get used to the sound of violent Chinese soap operas at 4am!
Fear of being robbed leads one neighbor to leave a floodlight on in their backyard all night! It shines right through our bedroom window!

And the children!
The kids in our street are a living confirmation that the zombie apocalypse is just around the corner. They appear to have lost the ability for verbal communication and seem only capable of screaming, grunting or swearing… nothing in between. The 'C' word is flung around with gay abandon regardless of who is present! For sport they tremble with delight at the prospect of tormenting some unsuspecting weaker victim. Younger children, or the single mother who lives across the road seem to be their current targets. Throwing stones at baby birds and snapping the branches off trees are a standard recreation till something more exciting comes along.

The constant rank screaming and abuse of neighbors on all sides, hateful and vulgar as the racist misogynistic gangsta rap that blasts through our cyclone mesh fence! The vernacular here is a form of hateful profanity which has replaced human conversation, the Morlocks now rule!

Surely this place is proof that the Zombie apocalypse has arrived and I must face it without rest because the dog next door didn't stop barking till two hours before dawn! Buildup mornings are always the same! Sleep deprived and in a lather of coffee scented sweat, with a pounding head I prepare to face the day!

Damn you Darwin! Damn your shopping malls and your wide streets full of impatient drivers, Damn your false sense of security ‘cameras’ and your V8 utes, Damn your ‘sporting fishermen’ your pig hunting yobbos and your endless piles of goon filled coke bottles! To hell with your FIFO workers in bright orange shirts! Damn your drunken fornicating fuckwits destitute and lying in their own waste! Damn the stink!
I have never felt a love so dear as how I hate you today.

Oh and this little gem from Andrew McMillan pretty much sums it up re: the heat!

Wet road

I traveled by bike on the wet road,
steam rose, traffic flowed,
Dodged the dodgy, flooded street gutters
broken bottles and mangled toads...

Passed the arse end of Darwin town,

Shaggy bearded tramp of a bloke
wet trousers drag each stroke,
When you ride in the tropics you know the taste,
Stale sweat mixed with the rain

From my office I can role past St Vinnies lunch time queue
Stale bread, cold tea...
daytime TV
 volume maxed

I was headed for parliament
Wedding cake castle, ten minutes flat
tyre mud splashed on my back
 crotch chafed, humidity 80%

Stop!
The road and the towers were too much
I looked to my left to old One Mile camp,
Bereft and forgotten
Bulldozers ready for their final cut

No joy there...  I rode on

I arrived at Parliament
just in time for the announcement....
The minister will not be joining us today.
Seems our leaders are a bunch of big girls blouses
To afraid to face the public, in case of greenies, and those damned rebel rousers!

Fracking

Last Tuesday saw a huge contingent from the bush turning up at NT Parliament house to protest against proposed fracking leases across the NT.

If I had time I'd say more but I'm on the road and don't have time to write.
Here's some photos just for the record. Over 300 at an NT rally is a pretty decent turn out!

Meditation: how to not

Too long between sit downs, cross legged at the gilded feet of a sculpted, iconic representation of the ideal reality of Gautama Buddha. (sitting in meditation pose) (I don't have a photo for you! Go search Google!)

So, after a couple of months of being too busy to attend, today finally everything slots into place perfectly, I'm free at just the right time and I head off to the temple for a two hour session... (Yep 2 hours! It's like a bloody marathon for me, after which I can be staggering out like a punch drunk boxer!). I drive into the parking lot and once again see only one other car. It belongs to Sensei.

Usually I'd just slope into the room drop my keys, wallet and phone in the bowl of worldly distractions, grunt my greetings, grab a cushion and join in wherever the group or Sensei is at... (If he's there on his own he could be already reaching for his own keys and wallet, hoping to go home and chill out in front of the Telly.) But I'd already seen the old guy just two days earlier and I'm starting to wonder if he's suspecting me of stalking or hero worship or some devious attempt to weasel my way into his favor. So I literally turned on my heals before I reached the door and got straight back into the car.

Now I had a few things I needed to do before going home so I set out to do something productive... Damn I'd rather listen to the Stones on the car stereo than be sitting cross legged detaching from the clumsy imitation of a bad Marx Brothers movie, my mental self commentary of who I think I am or waiting to find out who I truly am or, who am I?

I head off down McMillans Rd (one of our few major roads) not too sure where I'm going now, but the music is good! Volume UP! 'Sympathy for the Devil' pumping, see a hitch hiker who has just emerged from the Airport exit road, pull hard to the left open the door and now my course is set. Mitchel Street of course, that's where they always ask to go. That's where the hostels are at. Overpriced sweaty and crowded share rooms! Had a nice chat for 15 minutes, it's always a bit surreal meeting travelers who have just arrived and aren't really sure where they've landed or what's in store for them. Its an interesting way to escape the monotony of my own life and a good chance to court... chance? I didn't catch the fellas name. From Switzerland, speaks French, was here over 40 years ago... Usually the brief 15 minute ride is long enough to get a glimpse into a traveler's life, or itinerary... Of course the itinerary is only the story we carry around with us to avoid the panic of realizing we have absolutely no idea what may happen next! But... as Paul Kelly wrote and sings 'Every Fucking City'.

Now back to not meditating. I don't know why it takes me so long to tell a very simple story! OK here we are. What I did instead of meditating! I went for a drive, listened to loud Rock and Roll music, picked up a hitch hiker, grabbed a bottle of Pepsi Max and a pack of Salt and Vinegar chips, washed hand fulls of chips down with the Pepsi on my way to check out a video game shop! And that is how I do not meditate!

I ride...

Just thought I'd make a quick post of nothing in particular... just a ride into town maybe one day, I'll put together something that shows just how special this place is and how much beauty I see along the way... this isn't that post.

I was reading a fellow bicycle commuters blog the other day, he was simply describing some of the every day wonders he sees along the way and I was reminded of the sense of gratitude I have for living in such a beautiful part of the world and being fortunate enough to be able to cycle to work or anywhere else I'd like to go in this city.

I had intended to do a bunch of photos of all the wildlife I saw along the way but I didn't actually see too much today and was too slow with the camera for those things I did see so anyway here's a few of the wonders between my place and Darwin City.

As I rode through the park virtually right outside my door a flock of Red Collared Lorikeets was spooked from their roost by a group of Torres Strait Pigeons. The lorikeets would take flight, fly a circle around the trees and then come back and land where they started. Then the pigeons would do the same... It was really weird but then I saw the reason. A group of Black kites were hunting them and all the birds in the park were freaking out! Fortunately for the prey birds the Black kites are due to leave as the humidity returns to the Top End.

I left this scene and peddled off on my Xtracycle with the Avanti Blade in tow... literally.

Towing again...
Towing the Avanti to the bike shop for some tlc.

From the bike shop I headed down Dick Ward Drive to Fanny Bay. (Seriously that's what they're called!)
At Fanny Bay I rolled down past the giant Milkwood and the war memorial, past the playground to the beach and the rocks and the milky blue water and the fish jumping and a large group of Aboriginal people, probably salt water people, possibly Yolngu but maybe a mixed group... I dunno. It was pretty laid back... I didn't talk, just sat and watched the fish jumping for a while... walked to the sea cupped my hands and splashed it over my face and hair, wiping it over my arms and legs. Tasting the salty brew on my lips and dreaming of sailing over the horizon... Enjoying the glorious freedom of the salty sea and the blue sky for the brief time between now and the buildup.

Black kite's hunting along the coast!

Rolling on down the hill past the Yacht club I saw an interesting vessel and wondered what it would take to build her up! Too many times I've wandered down there and drooled through that fence.

Onward toward Vesties Beach, past the ski club where they've built a new bar, Million Dollar views!
That tourist boat bus blocks the path as it prepares to enter the drink.

Boat bus enters the drink... Quack

Peddle past the museum and to the left are a couple of Orange Footed Scrub fowl. Our very own Macropods. They're very common in Darwin but you won't find too many elsewhere. They are very particular about where they live and our City appears to have more suitable habitat than you'll find in the wild. Scrub fowl are loyal lovers. They are always hanging out in pairs, although recent observations have indicated that the females aren't too particular about who sires her chicks. Apparently.

Bit of a slope after the museum headed toward the Highschool. There aren't too many hills in Darwin so I don't often put my chain under too much stress. Well this hill put my gear to the test and I discovered that the 16,000 odd kms I've done have worn out my chain and sprockets! I had to gear right down to get up this hill, the chain kept slipping, I'll have to do something about that some time!

View of Mindil Beach from the lookout. Notice the lack of swimmers on this inviting stretch of coast? Darwin has plenty of nice beaches but unfortunately the combination of stingers, crocks, stone fish, sharks and possibly the huge tidal variation leaves our beaches virtually un-swum!

Oh Yeh... Mindil beach was actually a Larakia Burial site. Nobody cared too much back in the day and even when they built the casino (that big white building just left of the centre) they even dug up some bones! That's the territory for ya! The area has also been a Chinese Garden and holding pen for the abetwar, now it's the site of Darwin's biggest tourist market.

Spiegeltent: This tent is just awesome! Darwin Festival is on so there's art everywhere! All kinds... Check out the Mo on the guy in the shorts! There seems to be a bit of a trend lately for young arty guys to be sporting a Village People Mo! I don't get out much and have no idea how this became popular but it's a great laugh to see young taking their facial hair so seriously.

Sp Tent
Spiegeltent again.

Getting closer to town and there remain only a few signs of the Darwin I found when I arrived here 16 years ago! Oh where have the rusty iron roofs gone!

Met up with a mate and we headed down to Lameroo Beach for a chat. This was once the place where hippies and eccentric travelers used to live on the beach in busted up old boats. It's all been cleaned out now but there are still a few hangers on. Sometimes it feels like Darwin has been completely homogenized but if you get down to the hidden corners you'll find there still exists some of that old spirit that made this such a special place to be!

Today was the last day of the Asylum Seeker Art Cries Freedom exhibition so I dropped in and had a chat with Vikki the curator and Bill Day (Author of Bunji). The art was quite amazing. Click here  Not too many people turned up for this show. Compassion for the vulnerable is not really in vogue in this country at the moment!

Anyhow I'm sick of writing now and not too much more happened... I went back and wandered the beach on my own for a while and then rode home, sunburned nose, tired and happy.

Oh yeh I didn't go to work yesterday or today... two days annual leave... stress leave, what better way to spend them!

Cheers.

Family for Family

The culture of Darwin is constantly in a state of flux. When I arrived here only 15 years ago there was a sense of togetherness and community that I hadn't experienced in other places I'd lived. Such a large proportion of the population had originally come from somewhere else. Folk would often gather for BBQs, strangers were welcomed and there was a general sense of openness and acceptance of others from all walks of life. It was fun!
People I'd met who had lived here a lot longer than I, would tell me, that it's nothing like it used to be and that  Darwin used to be much more easygoing, that people were more connected before. Well maybe gradually that easygoing lifestyle is shifting, but the spirit still exists. Many of us who have experienced that special hospitality are determined to keep the spirit of welcome and acceptance alive.
Old Darwin Town lives! We will reject oppressive laws, we will reject inhumane policies, based on fear and xenophobia, and we refuse to condemn and fear our neighbors. We live too closely with the indigenous people of this country to believe that we are entitled to call ourselves Owner! We scoff at the attempts by Government to dehuhumanize those seeking asylum. They are just like the rest of us who have come here from elsewhere and we will reach out to them with the same friendship as was offered us when we arrived.

If you're in the Darwin area and are looking for something to do with your family and would like to show your support for those families who have been locked up from the moment they asked for asylum, then maybe you'd like to join the party outside the airport lodge.

Sell out at Little Mindil!

It's been planned and argued for several years now but while I was busy raising a family and my trips into town have become minimal they managed to sell off the Little Mindil Beach area and turn it into a Parking Lot! Worse still the beautiful treed escarpment has now been laid to waste and nothing is left but bare rock and tree stumps!

Ironically I noticed the decimated escarpment while attending Marnie Jay's art exhibition "No Place Like Home" at Burnett House on Myilli Point. It's Ironic because Marnie's art celebrates the culture and atmosphere of old Darwin Town.

As I approached the Heritage Listed venue I was struck by the distinct lack of greenness where once there was a lush and thick canopy of Monsoon Vine Forrest!

Escarpment destruction
(Land Care - On The Edge.... or is it over the edge?)

Escarpment destruction
(Tree stumps and parking lots - Can Greed and beauty exist in the same place?)

Another Wild and Beautiful place in Darwin has been stolen from us!
It is obvious to many of us that the NT is a classic example of Machiavellian State!

Escarpment destruction
(Government Shame - Beauty defiled, Habitat destroyed.... access denied!)

Despite the lack of respect shown for the intrinsic natural value of the escarpment as habitat or as simply shade or at bare minimum screening, the act of defoliating the entire cliff face defies logic when you hear what the new land owners next move was... and I don't quite know what form of madness describes this act.

Apparently at a recent entertainment event held at the Casino, security guards stood at the fence line above the cliff and prevented people from gazing down on the Casino Lawns... a view they would never have had if the forest had been left in tact!

Here's a recent comment about this matter from an Opposition Party member.

The Long Grass Band - Neil Murray

Neil Murray has a new album out! I know it's been available for a quite a while but Nobody told ME! The album is called Witness

Neil will be back in Darwin this dry season and will perform a 'Solo acoustic concert' at The Groove Cafe in Nightcliff on 30 & 31st July 8:00PM.

The last time I saw him perform was at the Groove 6 years ago!
The Groove is an undercover but open walled cafe. It's not a huge space but gets a bit of passing traffic and is quite a nice place to sit and listen to music. Last time I saw Neil at The Groove he attracted quite a crowd of fans who watched from outside the venue and the mood was great. Of course, (as sometimes happens) there were some more vocal and rather intoxicated fans hanging around who kept humbugging him to play their favorite songs.
"Hey Neil.... Ppppllaaiii 'Islannb Hom!'...... "Hey you! You play 'My I-land HOM!' "HEY!!! when you gonna play my Song?" "That's my song it's lovely!" You sing it now!"

Anyway this went of for a little while so Neil just shouts back "Hey you can bloody well wait! I'm not a bloody Duke Box" or words to that effect! It was kind of funny but probably a pain in the arse for Neil. I've seen him perform only about 3 times and each time he has to compete with the audience. Another time at Mindil Markets also in Darwin a pretty good crowd was gathered around to hear him and a bunch of Thick head youths came through the crowd and let off firecrackers right beside the stage!

As a native born Australian trying to find where I belong in this place Neil Murray's writing describes exactly all those things that are right at the heart things for me but I have rarely heard expressed by anyone else! I hope he keeps writing and performing his truth for years to come!
